I want the best out of my equipment and if it takes a bit of extra effort to get it then that's what I'll do. I know that my 80-400 lens just was not sharp on my D810 until I sent it and the camera back to Melville and it was perfect when it came back. There are plenty of Luddites out there that refuse to accept that lenses need calibration I'm not going to argue with them as they're a lost cause. At the end of the testing it shows the initial image and the final image side by side and even though it may only be an AF setting of +1 it does seem a tad sharper to my eyes. My 35mm S was -1 the 85 S was -1.the 300PF was +2 and the 500PF was +1. It then tells you the optimum AF setting for that particular lens. It then prompts you to set the AF to -20 and takes a shot, then -10, 0, +10 and +20. After that you start the test and it takes a before image and initial settings. Distance to the target and insufficient lighting are two that I had to correct initially.
#REIKAN FOCAL MANUAL MODE LONG LENSES FULL#
It connects easily enough and takes control of your camera, you run through some setup checks automatically and it informs you if some things are not right for the full test. The camera needs to be on a solid tripod and horizontal to the target. You connect the computer camera after mounting the target in a well lit vertical surface. I printed out the Focus Target but might buy the $20 hard target when I next need to order some stuff from B&H.

I downloaded the Mac version of Focal Pro ($99). As I was a bit bored I did decide however to purchase the latest version of Reikan Focal to check out the Z7 and Z6 with my current selection of lenses. I've been very happy with the focusing accuracy of all my Z lenses and the F mount 300PF and the 500PF. I used Reikan Focal some years ago but used Lens Align more recently. In my DSLR days I always used to check the focussing accuracy of my lenses.

I believe the Nikon Designers thought the same thing.

Being a control systems design engineer I always try add additional capability and features into my systems if I believe at some point it will make my life easier by having them. Nikon added the ability to Fine Tune Lenses for a reason, yeah there's a lot of internet chatter about it, mostly by people that don't know what they're talking about. This is NOT a review of any kind, I'm just sharing my findings after a morning testing some of my lenses.
